Workshop - London 2nd June 2026, 10.00-16.00
The Battery Value Equation
Asset or liability? How to assess the value of end-of-life batteries.
CES organises an interactive in-person workshop about the dynamics and drivers that will determine the future value of used batteries.

About the workshop
Are waste batteries assets or liabilities? The answer is not straightforward. End-of-life batteries have traded at prices approaching new battery levels, while others can only be handed to a recycler against a gate fee. How can used and waste batteries be priced so differently — and how will this develop over time?
This is the theme of this workshop.
The topic is urgent. From 2025, battery producers and importers in the EU must either join a producer responsibility organisation or establish their own take-back system — and demonstrate the financial capacity to do so. Battery value also directly affects ESS operators' financial reporting and any battery producer's future liability under European battery waste legislation.
Our aim is to bring clarity — using data — into how to value batteries today and in the future. We will present the CES Used Battery Value Forecast for the first time publicly and work through its components in detail: what determines a battery's future value, how much of each chemistry we expect to remain in European and global markets, and what individual players can do to enhance the value of their battery portfolios.
This is not a conference with 20 speakers. It is a focused, data-driven workshop built around CES's unique position covering battery lifecycles, the reuse market, the recycling industry, battery demand forecasts, and future volumes of used batteries and battery scrap. We will present significant data, but we will also drive discussions with guests from across the value chain — recyclers, reuse companies, OEMs, and dismantlers — who will share their perspective on how the market is developing.
Who should attend?
-
Battery producers and importers navigating producer responsibility obligations.
-
ESS developers and operators managing battery asset valuation.
-
Industrial battery users and producers
-
PROs building fee structures for battery take-back.
-
Recyclers and pre-processors planning for shifting feedstock economics.
-
Reuse and repurposing companies evaluating market entry or expansion.
-
Investors assessing battery recycling and reuse business models.
Programme
08:30 Doors open — coffee and networking We will distribute the participant list one week in advance to facilitate meetings.
10:00–11:15 The value of used batteries — today and in the future Presentation of the CES Used Battery Value Forecast: how we forecast values, future waste volumes, and opportunities across the market.
-
Understanding battery value and end-of-life treatment costs: what determines whether a battery is an asset or a liability at end of life
-
How the market has changed and continues to change and its impact on pricing across chemistries and applications
-
The key drivers of battery value: material prices, recycling costs, reuse demand, new battery competition, lifecycle duration, and trade flows
-
Where we believe battery values will settle in the future — by chemistry, application, and geography
15-minute coffee break
11:20–12:00 The realities of recycling – defining the recycling floor value – What recyclers can pay or must charge, how processing economics differ by chemistry and region, and how the cost structure is evolving as capacity grows and technology matures.
12:00–12:30 How will cost and demand for new batteries develop? Defining the ceiling – new battery prices set the competitive boundary for used batteries. Where are raw material and manufacturing costs heading, and what does this mean for the reuse opportunity window?
12:30–13:15 Standing networking lunch
13:15–13:45 Understanding the reuse market The space between the floor and the ceiling: how large is the demand for reused batteries, what applications absorb them, and how is this market maturing across ESS, EV replacement, and industrial applications?
13:45–14:30 Meet the reuse market – A moderated discussion with companies operating at the intersection of battery collection, assessment, and repurposing. What are they seeing? What feedstock do they need? What business models are working — and what isn't?
15-minute break
14:45–15:30 Who will get the batteries? – Moderated discussion with guest speakers and open to all participants. Where will value be generated in the end-of-life chain? How will the interplay between export, reuse, and recycling evolve over the next 15 years? What should producers, PROs, and recyclers be doing now to prepare?
15:30–16:00 Scenarios and strategies for positive value retention – Closing session – what can the industry do — individually and collectively — to increase the value of batteries at end of life? How do design choices, data transparency, partnerships, and regulatory frameworks contribute to better outcomes for everyone in the chain?
What you will take away
A data-driven understanding of how the used battery market will evolve over the next 15 years — and how the industry serving it will develop, including reuse and repurposing companies, dismantlers, recyclers, and the growing trade and export of applications with their batteries inside.
Through a combination of industry experience and CES data and analytics, participants will gain a clearer picture of the dynamics and underlying costs across the value chain — but also how the market can be shaped through active participation. Where can value be created? What is required for that to happen? And what role can individual players take?
All participants will receive a comprehensive data deck with the underlying analysis presented during the day.
We will distribute the participant list in advance to help attendees book meetings and connect with key stakeholders across the value chain.
